Introduction to Meditation by Mark Griffin – A Transformative Guide to Inner Awareness

This 53-page transcript is the complete teachings from a three-day meditation class Mark Griffin gave at Kripalu on September 27, 2013. In this powerful class, Mark guides practitioners on how to connect the movement of breath with the attention of the mind, leading to profound stillness and awareness. By internalizing the life force and aligning the mind with the breath, meditators are taught how to become less affected by external distractions and how to tune into the infinite inner world of the spirit. Mark explains:

The movement of the breath and the attention of the mind come together in this meditation, and the mind is profoundly affected. As you align your mind with the breath, the life force becomes naturally, spontaneously internalized. The senses become less external, less prominent; and in this way, the mind begins to slow down and to become more still. As it becomes more still, it becomes more essentialized; as it becomes more essentialized, it will slow down, become more still and eventually come to a stop. As the senses become internalized as the mind slows down, we disentangle ourselves from the external world, and become more increasingly aware of the internal world of the spirit, which is infinitely vast. Just as you had to learn to train your mind to operate in the external world, you also have to train your mind to operate in the internal world. It is a world with its own rules, its own nature. This essentially is what meditation is – paying attention to what’s going on inside.
