Meditation – The Self by Mark Griffin – Exploring Consciousness Beyond Objectification
This downloadable PDF is the transcript of a one-day intensive given by Mark Griffin on November 23, 2013. In this transformative teaching, Mark explores the unparalleled depth of meditating on the Self – a practice that transcends objects and unveils the very ground of all existence.
Unlike traditional meditation techniques focused on external objects like breath or mantra, Meditation – The Self delves into the experience of pure consciousness, which arises within all things as all things. Through the cessation of the mind, practitioners can dissolve layers of objectification and connect with the deeper substrata of awareness. Mark explains:
“The meditation on the Self is so profound. It arises without object, and you yourself are that consciousness. So it is not similar to meditation when we select an object as a point of focus – such as the breath or a mantra, the body or the mind – because it arises within all things as all things, and anything that is selected is absorbed instantaneously into that ground. So I’ve often thought that in relationship to the process, the method of meditation – where it is a very standard operation to select a point of focus such as the breath, or the mind, or a mantra – that because the Self arises within all things as all things, the way that is the most effective is where we place the consciousness, our awareness in a position of cessation. We simply stop the mind. When all things arise within the Self as the Self, any objectification, however refined or subtle, ends up becoming a layer across which the Self is diffused or masked. The process of stopping the mind is the swiftest way to unveil those layers of consciousness, getting down to the deeper and deeper substrata.“
Key Themes Explored:
- Meditation Without Object: Understanding the Self as consciousness itself, beyond the focus on external or internal objects.
- Cessation of the Mind: Learn why stopping the mind is the most effective method for unveiling the layers of consciousness.
- The Ground of Being: Explore how the Self arises as the foundation of all things and the key to profound spiritual realization.
- Transcending Objectification: Discover how even subtle layers of focus can mask the true experience of the Self.
Excerpt from the Talk:
