Skillful means is a spiritual principle: that which is known by the mind is a reflection of what is called “false light” or “false knowledge”; but that the mind itself is a mirror, and in the sense of the mirror, it is a non-reality. If I were to have a mirror in my hand and hold it up, and I hold it in such a way that I could see Kai in the mirror, well that’s not Kai, that’s a reflection of Kai; Kai’s over there. That’s what the mind does. What appears in the mind is the reflection of a reality that is originating from a deeper place. I mean, I couldn’t get in the car with the reflection of Kai and drive back to LA with him; I need the real Kai. And that’s what the mind does.

This is what I talk about when I say, “identity”. In the journey from separate identity or individual identity to universal identity, which is called the Self, the individual identity is equivalent to the reflection of you in the mirror. It is reflecting something deeper, something that originates from a deeper place, a deeper cause.
