~ Verse 4 ~

Here is the secret knowledge that is
difficult to attain in the three worlds.
Listen to it carefully as I reveal it to you now.
The Absolute is the same as the Guru.
This is the truth, O beautiful One, this is the truth.

Devanagari

Durlabham trishu
door - lu - bhum  tri - shoo

Note: the consonant combination "bh" means there is a slight aspiration, as though you have extra air following the pronunciation of each consonant – bh is pronounced like 'abhor'

Durlabham means difficult; tri means three. These together with the next word loka give the meaning" this knowledge about Guru Yoga is difficult to attain in the three worlds.

(break)
lokeshu
lo - kay - shoo
Note: loka means world, or location. We hear it often used in siddha loka - the world of the siddhas.
(break)
tach chrnushva
tuch - chrin - oosh - va

Note: When we have a single 'c' in a Sanskrit word, it is pronounced like 'ch'. When we have a double 'cch' as we do here, try to get both 'ch' sounds in, one right after the other. It's a bit tricky at first, but if you practice them separately at first, then keep speeding it up, they will run together properly.

The 'r' is the vowel to link the 'ch' to the 'n'

The 'v' is soft

(break)
vadaamyaham
vu - daam – yu – hum
(break)
Now the first line all together...
Durlabham trishu lokeshu, tach chrnushva vadaamyaham
(break)
Gurum vinaa
goo - room  vee - naa
(break)
brahma naanyat
bra - (h) - mu naan - yut

Note: give the 'h' in brahma some air, some expiration, just a bit, so it doesn't end up like brama.

Brahman is absolute pure consciousness. Brahma and Brahman are not the same thing. Brahma is one of the three Gods of the Hindu trinity (with Shiva and Vishnu). The 'n' of what looks like the next word actually goes with this word.

(break)
satyam satyam varaanane
sut - yum  sut - yum  vu - raa - nu - nay
Note: satyam means Truth. Varaanane means Beautiful One
(break)
and the second line all together...
Gurum vinaa brahma naanyat, satyam satyam varaanane
(break)

Now repeat the entire verse all together:

Durlabham trishu lokeshu, tach chrnushva vadaamyaham; Gurum vinaa brahma naanyat, satyam satyam varaanane.
and with the keywords:
Durlabham trishu lokeshu, tach chrnushva vadaamyaham; Gurum vinaa brahma naanyat, satyam satyam varaanane.
Here is the secret knowledge that is difficult to attain in the three worlds. Listen to it carefully as I reveal it to you now. The Absolute is the same as the Guru. This is the truth, O beautiful One, this is the truth.
